Research interests

I lead a team of 3 research fellows and a research nurse who are working in the following
research areas:

1. Colonoscopic High Frequency Mini-probe Ulrtrasound
This is a pioneering technique which involves the use of mini-probes (n the shape of wires
that are inserted into a colonoscope) and allow accurate staging of malignant polyps and
colonic tumours. This technique helps making accurate diagnosis of the invasiveness of
malignant polyps and helps avoid unnecessary major operations.

2. Effective
follow-up protocols for early detection and treatment of metastases of
colorectal cancer
after surgery of the primary tumour. 40% of colorectal tumour will recur
after prmary surgery - successful treatment of the recurrence depends on the early detection
of recurrence.

3.
Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS) - a minimally invasive technique to treat
rectal tumours without abdominal surgery.

4.
Diverticular DIsease.  I have established the first Diverticular Disease clinic in the UK and
our team does research in the epidemiology of the condition as well as the role of serotonin in
the pathogenesis. In April 2009 I organised an internaitonal conference on Diverticular
Disease at the Royal Society of Medicine. I am the UK Chief Investigator for a multinational
trial investigating the potential role of the drug mesalazine n the prevention of recurrence of
diverticulitis.

5.
Pelvic floor disorders
I conduct research in the treatment of obstructing defaecation syndrome with the STARR
operaton and treatments of incontinence.
